ABINGER STAINED GLASS | AMANDA WINFIELD

St Michaels RC Church, Ashtead

Altar & Chapel Windows

Three projects for this church. In 1988 I was working at Goddard and Gibbs Studios in Shoreditch, East London. We were commissioned to make the glass above the altar in this church. I was totally thrilled when I was asked to create the glass on either side.

This was more tricky than I anticipated – matching colours from 30 years ago without removing the existing glass. I designed the side panels to look in keeping with the original artist, but adding in my own creativity with the colour blending.

The glass is all mouth blown and made in Germany by Lamberts. It is the very best glass that is made, and totally stunning to see and use.

Following this I made two windows for The Lady Chapel. These replaced designs which were created with transparent glass paint by a parishioner's daughter.
