ABINGER STAINED GLASS | AMANDA WINFIELD
Commission
With nearly forty years of experience designing and making stained glass, I am here to guide and support you with your bespoke stained glass project.
If you have a space that would benefit and be enhanced by stained glass, or you are looking to add a traditional feature to your period property – I am here to help.
I often produce one off bespoke designs for my clients which capture something, or somewhere, very personal to them. Take a look at my gallery for examples of previous designs.
You may have definite ideas on the style and colour you would like for your project, but equally you may not, which is where I am here to help. Whatever your ideas for glass within your home or other setting, I can support and guide you, and bring your creation and ideas to life.
If you have a set budget for your glass work I will work within that if possible. As every project is unique I do not have a price ‘per square metre’ – but I am happy to give an estimate to help you decide what to have.
-
Once we have settled on an idea and rough price I can carry out a lot of initial discussions about design and measurements over the phone or Whatsapp video call.
Of course you might prefer to come to my workshop to see and handle the glass and get an idea of what's possible, there's nothing like seeing the glass to help you decide on colour.
-
Following the visit I will produce a scaled watercolour design, showing the detail and colour that will be created in your finished piece. I will send this to you along with a final quote based on this design.
-
If you are happy with both design and quote then at this point I will require a 50% deposit.
Then I produce a full size drawing, known as a cutline for a leaded light or in the case of a stained glass window, a cartoon. I will show this to you for approval before I start making your stained glass.
I create your stained glass windows in my workshop studio in The Surrey Hills. You are welcome to visit to observe the process and are positively encouraged to do so.
-
When your stained glass is finished either myself or my colleague John will install the glass for you. I often supply the glass to you ready for your own contactors to fit.
Some projects are encapsulated into sealed units to comply with recent building regulations and these are a minimum of 24mm thick.

The process
-
Step 1
To get started most people send me approximate sizes, a rough budget and photos of the opening.
-
Step 2
Following discussion about design and direction of light, I produce a water colour sketch for you to approve.
-
Step 3
I can visit site to measure if necessary but often I liaise with either the client, the builder or the carpenter for final sizes.
-
Step 4
Following approval of my final design I accept a 50% deposit and start making your stained glass window or panel.
-
Step 5
I create a cartoon for the painted stained glass and produce a cut line which is the full size drawing of your window or panel.
-
Step 6
Using the cut line I cut the glass and stick it to my glass easel. It’s essential to see how your window will look with daylight streaming through the glass.
-
Step 7
If the window is painted, that’s the next stage and this will be fired in the kiln. I then place it all back on the glass easel for final approval.
-
Step 8
I lead your window together, weatherproof, polish and clean the glass. For encapsulated stained glass I allow three weeks to dry, ready to fit.
