Victorian Bird Centres

Victorian Bird Centres,  Surrey, 2016

My clients door way is grand but all in plain glazing. We thought, because of old bar holes in the frame, that there was stained glass originally. They chose the birds they wanted to depict and I designed the windows for them. My bird centres, or roundels as they are sometimes called, are painted by a fellow maker who is an expert at painting Victorian style birds. The pencil drawings are hers. She had not been asked for long tailed tits before this so it was exciting to see her designs and then see them translated so beautifully onto glass. I always use mouth blown graded ruby glass for the borders as this is very traditional. When the sun shines through these windows it looks spectacular and has transformed their hall way.
