Pyrford Cross
Deep Sandblasted and Acid Polished Cross. The Church of the Good Shepherd, Pyrford, Surrey.
The brief for this piece of glass work was that it should be visible at times of worship but subtle at all other times.
This is in a newly built foyer on The Church of the Good Shepherd in Pyrford, Surrey. This church is very much used by the local community. Not only a place of worship but also as a meeting place. Parent and baby groups, artists meetings and receptions are all held in the new extension.
The glass is in a very light area with clear glass to the ceiling and practically the full height of the walls as well. It was a tall order to produce something to fit the criteria and still have some presence.
The cross is made up from the words of the 23rd Psalm, The Lord is my Shepherd…. and then deep sandblasted and acid polished. The whole piece of glass is hung from the top on two neat rods into the wall and sitting in a light box. At night the cross looks stunning when lit and is also visible by day.
